16th TELMIN held to promote ICT growth in the ASEAN region
5 December 2016 --The 16th ASEAN Telecommunications and Information Technology Ministers Meeting (TELMIN) was held in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam last 25 - 26 November 2016. In line with this year’s theme, “Connected Innovative Community,” the meeting highlighted progress made on the ASEAN ICT Masterplan (AIM) 2020, which envisions a digitally-enabled, secure, sustainable, and innovative ASEAN community. The Chair and Vice-Chair of the meeting were H.E. Dato Mustappa Sirat (Minister of Communications in Brunei Darussalam) and H.E. Tram Iv Tek (Minister of Posts and Telecommunications in Cambodia) respectively.
The Philippine delegation was composed of DICT Secretary Rodolfo A. Salalima, Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Meynardo LB. Montealgre, Second Secretary and Consul Melvin Almonguera, DICT Undersecretary Jorge V. Sarmiento (TELSOM Leader), DICT Director Maria Teresa Magno-Garcia, DICT Director Nestor Bongato, and Economic Assistant and Attaché Frederick Rili.
The 16th TELMIN was held to affirm regional commitment to strengthen ASEAN’s current ICT development agenda, as well as to address key ICT-related issues such as cybersecurity. It was agreed that TELMIN would be the platform to address cybersecurity issues in ASEAN and lead the ASEAN Cybersecurity Cooperation Strategy for a “robust cybersecurity cooperation and a capacity-building framework”.
In a Ministerial joint declaration released by organizers, Ministers “reiterated their support to further enhance the development of ICT policies, human resources as well as connectivity in the region.” Secretary Salalima expressed support for the Joint Declaration on behalf of the Philippine delegation. Finally, it was agreed that the 17th Telecommunications and Information Technology Ministers Meeting will be held in Cambodia in 2017.
